Can the Right Mattress Help You with Your Lower Back Discomfort?

According to various medical studies, a predominant cause of disability in the world is the lower back pain. Stress, bad posture, unhealthy lifestyle or uncomfortable sleeping may all contribute to such a condition. If you happen to have a medical diagnosis such as scoliosis, for instance, the right bedding becomes essential for your well-being.

The position you sleep in and the bed you rest on can make a big difference under such circumstances. Repairing your back starts with making the right choices when it comes to your mattress. I know that lower back pains vary from person to person and it’s impossible to indicate one single type of bed to help everyone. But still, there are a few simple guidelines anyone of us can follow, for our best interest and I hope you may find them useful:

  • Lower back discomfort causes various sleeping disorders, the most frequent one being insomnia. And there’s the vicious cycle you can’t escape: lack of sleep will only make the pain worse. But a medium firm, good quality innerspring or memory foam mattress will decidedly contribute to lowering your pain.
  • Most specialists consider memory foam as the best material in a mattress for people suffering from back pains, especially scoliosis. The main reason for this is the type of support they can provide and the longevity of the product. Also, they keep the spine aligned but are also soft enough to grant good comfort. 
  • When you're shopping for the highest quality bed for back discomfort, make sure you try several products to find the right one. Lie down on them for 10 – 15 minutes, in your favorite sleeping position and see how that feels.
  • One essential feature you should look for in a mattress is proper distribution of body weight. It will ensure that your spine remains straight during the night. Once again, memory foam products are the most indicated ones: the foam follows the shape of your body, and it gives full support.
  • Once you’ve chosen the perfect mattress, try these particular tricks to improve your sleep even more: if you love sleeping on your side, put a pillow between your legs; if you enjoy sleeping on your stomach, place the pillow under your abdomen. If you love to sleep on your back, put the cushion under your knees.
One last piece of advice: ask the opinion of your doctor before purchasing a new mattress, if you have a medical diagnosis. It may prove extremely beneficial since you'll know what to look for throughout the diversity of models on the market.
