Music: Earth Song (Michael Jackson)

8:00 AM

I'm saying heal the planet, heal the world, save our children, save the forest.
There's nothing wrong with that, right?
-Michael Jackson

We can't turn a blind eye and shrug off what's currently happening in the real world. Tweet

The graphic, heart-wrenching images and disturbing news about war, school shootings, and animal cruelty remind me of the Earth Song.

If you haven't heard the lyrics or seen the video of Michael Jackson's Earth Song, now is the right time.

If after listening to it or watching him belt out his emotions and you're still not moved, I'm not sure if you're human at all.

You better have yourself checked.

Earth Song is one of, if not the most genius, honest, awakening, emotive songs ever written.

It questions and rants about our planet's situation and what we do about it.
It will make you stop in your tracks and wonder:

"What on earth are we doing to the world and to ourselves?"

It will make you ask for maybe the nth time, "What on earth are these wars for anyway?!"

Caution: contains some graphic images (all photos from Google images).

Earth Song

Michael Jackson

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain

What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine

Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son

What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine

clip from the Earth Song video

Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars

Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)

What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(Ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)

What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)

What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)

What about forest trails
(Ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)

What about the Holy Land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)

What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(Ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)

What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)

What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What about us)
What about death again
(Ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

During an Earth Song performance

"I respect the secrets and magic of nature. That’s why it makes me so angry when I see these things that are happening, ya know. And every second, I hear the size of a football field is torn down in the Amazon. I mean, that kind of stuff really bothers me. That’s why I write these kind of songs, ya know. Gives them sense of awareness and awakening and hope to people."

-Michael Jackson on Earth Song

Oh, If we only listen.

  2. These things have been going on since the beginning of time. Mans cruelty has no boundaries. This will continue to happen until the end of time. It's a shame, but it is the way of things. Power, position, money and then more power.

    Have a blessed day. ☺

  4. It's an incredible song and I've always loved it. The images you posted with the lyrics of the song are so incredibly demonstrative of this hurt dysfunctional world - however, nature itself will always make it through - we are nothing but a speck and nature doesn't need us humans. Thanks for posting this today. I'm going to listen to the song again.

  9. Animals kill to protect their young and to survive. Man kills man and animals out of cruelty and what they call sport. Killing an animal or torturing it, such as in bullfighting, is not a sport, it is just plain cruelty. I love Heal the World by Michael Jackson, it is a beautiful song. These images you are sharing are indeed graphic, but turning a blind eye doesn't stop it from happening, and it sickens me to see animals killed just for their ivory, fur or whatever else people can make money on.

  11. Lux, very graphic for a Monday morning! A good reminder for us to think about what is going on around us. Many of us feel too helpless to make a difference. But each little thing we do to preserve the earth is helpful. Great song.

  12. Hello, very touching song. I have listened to this song many times in the past. This song always made me wonder what are human being doing to ourselves and the surroundings. We are in no way behaving like animals and perhaps animals are better than us because animals don't kill wantonly. The cruelty with which we treat other human beings is something only mentally depraved people will do. While all religions teach good things we commit unspeakable and unthinkable atrocities in the name of religion. What is the difference between us and devils.

This song must he explained to world leaders, religious heads, terrorist, extremists etc. so that they will understand the true meaning of brotherly love and respect for each other.

Wonderful song filled with immense meaning for everyone to think and make this world a better place to live in peace, happiness and prosperity.

    Best wishes

  16. WOW... classique... hehe. I like Michael Jackson. During the 90's, he went out and produced a lot of sociopolitical tunes. When he started he sang about being "bad" and some normal pop stuff. I guess during the 90's he realized how large his audience was and he started singing about the environment, Africa and race. That being said, I'd rather listen to Yano or Asin when looking for songs with bigger meanings. Filipino context e...

  17. Growing up in the sixties -- having attended sit ins for peace, no more war toy demonstrations, Vietnam demonstrations and having such hopes for peace it really saddens me that we haven't come any further than we have.

  20. The very last line (except for the refrain) is important: “Do we give a damn.” This is the overall question. Even if we are aware of the (not only environmental) issues around us, do we care? Are we doing anything to prevent them?

It's our jobs to be good stewards in all things and take care of each other...if only we would do a better job,

  25. This is really moving and sad all at the same time. I just dont understand why people and realigion have to kill one another in order just to prove that their God is the real God. I mean, what kind of God is that? Also, people might not know that we God's steward and seeing animals treated badly and even nature, kills me.

I pray that people realize that as they hurt earth, they also kill themselves.
