Books 14 Recent Romance Reads: Mini Book Reviews 8:11 PM We moved across state lines. And between planning, packing, loading, unloading, and trying to get settled again, the blog went quiet for a while. Sorry!Books were the one thing that carried me through it all, so I'm sharing the romance reads that kept me steady the last three months.Rom-Com and Contemporary Romance Books1. The Hotshot by Piper RayneStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶 (3/5)Tropes: baseball romance, fake dating, single guardianship, best friend's brother, family responsibilityA nurse suddenly finds herself raising three kids she never planned for, and her best friend's brother refuses to let her carry all of it alone. I liked the found-family setup here, and the slow burn gave the story a soft emotional center. This one felt warm, sweet, and easy to read. READ THE HOT SHOT 2. The Wild Card by Piper RayneStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶 (3/5)Tropes: baseball romance, surprise pregnancy, one-night stand, brother's best friend, forced proximityThe Wild Card has chaos in the setup and charm in the execution. Callie and Foster are messy in a fun way, and the surprise pregnancy angle adds pressure without making the story feel too heavy. It moved quickly and kept the romance front and center. READ THE WILD CARD 3. The Love Haters by Katherine CenterStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: Closed-door romanceTropes: workplace romance, forced proximity, small-town, healingKatherine Center can host a masterclass in romance. She writes stories reminiscent of 90s romcoms. It hooks you with the chemistry and witty banter between characters. While Katie's internal monologues slow down in the middle and the climax strains believability, the book's focus on body positivity, self-love, and healing compensates. George Bailey, the lovable Great Dane, steals the show. READ THE LOVE HATERS 4. The Rom-Commers by Katherine CenterStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: Closed-door romanceTropes: grumpy-sunshine dynamic, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, workplace romanceTwo screenwriters rewriting a rom-com script while navigating through their differences. The Rom-Commers is charming and fun to read. Charlie is a lovable grump, and Emma is a smart, fierce heroine. The book blends humor with emotional depth. Definitely worth binge-reading. READ THE ROM-COMMERS Small-Town and Emotional Romance5. Wishes on the Waves by Catherine Michaels (ARC)Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3.5/5)Spice rating: Closed-door romanceTropes: single mom x single dad, dealing with grief, small-town settingI wasn't expecting to feel this much from a beach read. I thought it'd be light and easy, but Annie totally wrecked me. It looks simple, like a cute coastal romance, and it is. But it's also deeper. The story shows that healing isn't avoiding pain; it's choosing to live fully despite it. I struggled to stay engaged with the story, but it was well wrapped up in the end. READ WISHES ON THE WAVES 6. Among Wildflowers by C. Ellan Rose (ARC)Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶 (2/5)Tropes: city girl x small-town vet, opposites attract, slow burn, emotional healingA small-town romance with a sweet, slow-burn feel that reminded me a little of a Hallmark movie. The town had so much charm. The wildflowers, the cozy vibe, the sense of community. A place you want to call home. I like Ali's bestie, Misha. I just wish there were more redemption and vindication for Ali. READ AMONG WILDFLOWERS 7. Crazy in Love by Laura PavlovStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶 (3/5)Tropes: enemies to lovers, billionaire romance, he falls hard, verbal sparring, small-town settingLaura Pavlov's small-town romance pulls you in, making you want to be part of the characters' circle and move there yourself. It's about a grumpy billionaire who meets a woman determined not to back down. The pace is lively, romantic, and filled with enough tension to keep you hooked. For those of us who've read the Rosewood River series, we finally get some answers to that mystery from the first book. Honestly, though, I feel like Laura's earlier series were a lot stronger than her recent ones. It's like she's lost that special touch she used to have. Or maybe I've just gotten used to her style. READ CRAZY IN LOVE 8. In a Heartbeat by Laura PavlovStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶 (3/5)Tropes: childhood best friends-to enemies-to lovers, workplace romance, it's always been youSecond-chance romance can be tricky, but this one landed for me. A cowboy reconnecting with his estranged best friend after she returns home down on her luck has all the ingredients for a good emotional read, and the story makes the most of them. It was tender, a little aching, and very readable. READ IN A HEARTBEAT 9. Whisper Sweet Nothings by Laura PavlovStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶 (3/5)Tropes: single dad x nanny romance, age gap, forced proximity, slow burnArcher's internal war between his fierce paternal protectiveness and his undeniable magnetism toward Winnie creates a beautifully restrained, high-tension slow burn that makes the eventual open-door payoff explosive. The web of cameos from Laura Pavlov's series might confuse newcomers, but the reveal of the town's gossip columnist rewards loyal fans. It's a comforting finale that will make you long for the next story in Pavlov's world.READ WHISPER SWEET NOTHINGS 10. Wild Card by Elsie SilverStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶🌶🌶 (4/5)Tropes: ex's dad, age gap, forced proximity, forbidden loveA grumpy firefighter and a sunny yoga instructor stranded together is already a strong start, and Elsie Silver knows how to make the most of it. This one had humor, heat, and enough emotional weight to keep it from feeling too light. It was playful in places, but it still delivered the feelings. It made me wonder how they'll make it, but Elsive has always delivered HEA, and this one didn't disappoint. READ WILD CARD Romantic Suspense and Mystery11. Captivation Creek by Claire Kingsley (ARC)Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶 (2/5)Tropes: work best friends to lovers, close proximity, romantic suspense, small-town romanceBest friends turned roommates turned amateur murder investigators is a very good pitch, and the book fully commits to it. I liked the balance here between the mystery and the romance. The feelings were big, the pacing stayed sharp, and this was one of those reads that kept me saying I'd stop after one more chapter. READ CAPTIVATION CREEK 12. Across the Vanishing Sky by Catherine Cowles (ARC)Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶 🌶🌶 (4/5)Tropes: romantic suspense, grumpy x sunshine, reclusive hero, neighbors, single mom, morally gray MMC, missing personCatherine Cowles excels at emotional suspense romance, and this book reminded me why I keep coming back for her stories. A woman returns to the town that broke her to find her missing best friend, and the guarded neighbor gradually becomes her most trusted ally. It was tense, emotional, and hard to put down. Catherine keeps you guessing, and every guess will be wrong. You'd want a bestie like her. Her unwavering dedication to Nova's memory and her determination to find her, while raising a single mom, made it impossible not to root for her. She's here for answers, and nothing will stop her. READ ACROSS THE VANISHING SKY Romantasy (Romance + Fantasy) Books13. War of Fire and Fury by Marion BlackwoodStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶 🌶🌶 (4/5)Tropes: fated mates, fae x dragon shifter, enemies to lovers, political intrigue, romantasyFinal books have a lot to carry, and this one had the job of bringing a huge conflict to a close. Selena is leading a last, desperate war against centuries of cruelty and tyranny, so the stakes stay high throughout. The finale gave the series a strong finish. READ WAR OF FIRE AND FURY 14. Rites of the Starling by Devney PerryStar rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)Spice rating: 🌶 🌶 (2/5)Tropes: slow burn, world-building, secret identity, multiple POV, romantasyThis sequel completely blew my mind. As soon as I finished reading the book, I wanted to start again because I felt like I had missed so much that was just in front of me. A queen separated from the man she loves, hunted through a cursed world, and pushed toward a destiny she never asked for made for a tense start. The pacing stayed strong, the world felt rich without slowing the story down, and the plot twist caught me off guard in a way I genuinely appreciated. READ RITES OF STARLING What are you reading? This reading stretch had a little bit of everything I usually want when life feels busy and loud: comfort reads, slow-burn romance, small-town emotion, sharp banter, suspense, and a fantasy sequel that fully delivered. Some books felt soft and steady. Others had more tension, more mystery, or more heat. All of them helped make a hectic season feel a little easier to manage. What are you reading or up to lately? Books Book Review: Secret Haven by Catherine Cowles 8:37 AM Short Book Review: Secret Haven is satisfying, suspenseful, and delightfully sweet. It's a small-town romantic suspense novel, the finale to Catherine Cowles's Sparrow Falls series. I love it!Book Summary: Secret HavenSecret Haven by Catherine Cowles is a contemporary romance, the sixth in the Sparrow Falls series. It's about Fallon and Kye, teenage sweethearts facing lots of secrets and struggles. Shared a secret past: Fallon and Kyler were close as teens, bonding over tough family issues. Fallon lost her dad and brother, while Kyler dealt with neglect and abuse. Their friendship and feelings grew, but when Kyler moved in with Fallon's family as a foster kid, they had to pretend they were strangers. 14 years later: Fallon is now a social worker, and Kyler's a tattoo artist and MMA gym owner. They hit a bump when Fallon takes a case involving Kyler's half-sisters, which forces him to face his traumatic past.Marriage of convenience: Kyler wants custody to give his sisters a better life, but Fallon knows his dark past might hurt his case. She suggests they get married to help him out.Danger lurks: Things get complicated when Kyler's past dangers reappear, putting Fallon in danger too. As they deal with the threats, their pretend marriage starts to feel real.It should be simple. A marriage on paper. A solution to an impossible problem.Except nothing about Kyler and Fallon has ever been simple. As they play house and pretend their history doesn't simmer between every glance, old feelings resurface. But so does a dangerous threat from their past, one determined to destroy the fragile haven they're trying to create.Book TropesRomantic SuspenseMutual PiningSecond ChanceMarriage of ConvenienceIt's Always Been You vibeFound FamilyProtective hero Hilarious Grandma Friends to LoversDual Timelines/Perspectives"My Wife"Book Main CharactersFallon Colson: Kyler's Sparrow. Empathetic, resilient, and caring. She is dedicated to helping children in need to the point of neglecting her own and putting her life at risk. May have a vengeful streak.Kyler "Kye" Blackwood: Protective, reserved, and fiercely loyal, especially when it comes to his family. Hayden, Clementine, Gracie: Kyler's half-sisters.The Colson clanBook Review: Secret Haven by Catherine Cowles Book RatingStars:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)/ Spice level: 🌶🌶🌶 (3/5)Catherine Cowles' Secret Haven is as surprising, fun, and colorful as Fallon's revenge glitter bomb! It's a fantastic ending to a beloved series. It's hilarious but also heartbreaking and healing, suspenseful and tender, with the kind of slow-burn romance that makes you swoon like a teenager. What I likeHe's a gonerJust when I thought Fallon had been nursing unrequited feelings for Kyler all these years, we flip to his POV and, plot twist: the man has been head-over-heels, utterly gone for her since he was sixteen."What. Did. You. Call. My. Wife?"When Catherine announced that my most anticipated couple in the entire Sparrow Falls series is getting not just a story but an arranged marriage plot, I literally squealed. This is hands down one of my all-time favorite tropes, and it hits differently when the MMC starts dropping those possessive "my wife" lines. Beautiful FamilyThe Colsons have always been my favorite kind of chaotic: unconventional, fierce, and full of love that doesn't fit anyone else's definition. Reading the siblings' group chat is a blast. And Lolli is too funny with her obsession with, uhm, interesting art.Kyler This scary-looking, tattooed troublemaker made me tear up more than the other books in the series. Because beneath all that armor is someone who never learned he was worthy of goodness but gives only the good to everyone he meets.Secret Haven Book Quotes"I've been dreaming of you since I was sixteen. You've been my one spark of light in the hellish dark. The only good thing in my life.""You've been my home. My resting place. Whenever the world spins too fast or things get too hard, I know I can count on you to pause it.""Sometimes, it takes the bad to wake us up to the good.""No matter what comes, my battered and blackened heart will always be yours."Read Secret Haven BookIf you've been waiting for Kyler's story, it's worth every moment of anticipation. But don't worry about jumping into her other series. You can start with Sparrow Falls or Lost & Found without any issues. What is the first book in Sparrow Falls? The first book in the Sparrow Falls series is Fragile Sanctuary. It features a grumpy/sunshine, brother's best friend romance between Rhodes and Anson. Is Fragile Sanctuary a series in order?Fragile Sanctuary is the first book in the Sparrow Falls series, so it is the correct starting point for that series. The books in Sparrow Falls should be read in their release order: Fragile SanctuaryDelicate EscapeBroken HarborBeautiful ExileChasing ShelterSecret Haven What is Catherine Cowles' most popular book?Based on recent success, Secret Haven is her most notable book; her first to hit the New York Times bestseller list. On reading platforms, Beautifully Broken Pieces leads the charts, followed by Fragile Sanctuary and Tattered Stars. Personally, I love Fractured Sky.What age group are Catherine Cowles' books for?Catherine Cowles' books are adult romantic suspense, usually for readers 18 and up. They include adult themes, like sexual content, along with tough topics like trauma, abuse, and crime or murder mysteries. Check the trigger warning before reading. What is the best Catherine Cowles series? The best series really depends on what you like. Some popular picks (which I agree with) include:Sutter Lake Series: The first book, Beautifully Broken Pieces, is a fan favorite.Lost & Found Series: Loved for its strong writing and the "found family" vibe.Sparrow Falls Series: Super popular now, a great way to get into her work.Tattered & Torn Series: Also a common starting point.Authors and Book PR AgentsHey indie authors and Book PR folks! Books Book Review: Obsession Falls By Claire Kingsley 1:37 AM ARC Book Review: Obsession Falls by Claire Kingsley I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to receive my first advanced reader copy (ARC). Ever! It's a book written by one of my favorite romance authors, and its release date is October 12, 2023. Let's get this ARC book review of Obsession Falls by Claire Kingsley started.Book SummaryAudrey's back in her hometown with her Mom and spoiled Persian cat. Temporarily just until she found her footing again. She's gone through many job rejections that she reluctantly accepted a job at a local newspaper in the next town as a...well, she didn't even know the full job description. She was just winging it.When roomies turn to room-foes, thanks to Audrey's playful and energetic derpy dog who couldn't leave the cat alone, she grabs the first pet-friendly rental she sees. Enter Josiah - the grumpy hunky lumberjack neighbor and landlord doing some fixer-upper magic next door. After his past experiences, Josiah embraced the peaceful life of solitude.Sparks fly between these two despite the awkward and embarrassing meet-up. But when a creeper starts stalking Audrey, Josiah goes into full protective mode to keep her safe. Giphy TropesSmalltown romanceLandlord - TenantGrumpy loner - Sunshiny dog loverSuspense (Stalker)Book Review: Obsession Falls by Claire KingsleyWhen Claire announced that she'd be writing about the Havens, I thought it would be awkward or odd because of their rivalry with the Baileys in the Bailey Brothers series (one of my fave small-town romance series). But that series ended so well that seeing the families here post-feud is heartwarming.I get a thrill every time a character I know is mentioned. It gives me that warm, nostalgic feeling like coming home for the holiday after a long time of being away. The story has a good blend of comedy, suspense, and romance.Claire Kingsley has a talent for writing likable characters. Despite being terrible at communicating, Josiah is a kind person, a good son, and a successful real estate mogul. Audrey remains optimistic and cheerful, even though life has thrown her some tough challenges.I love the chemistry between Josiah and Audrey. It's not as spicy as Claire's previous romance novels, but it still got some steam.I love returning to the quirky little town of Tilikum - home of my favorite Bailey brothers."I liked the quaintness and slow pace of Tilikum life." Audrey YoungWill I recommend this book? Definitely! I'm yet to read a Claire Kingsley book that I didn't enjoy.TumblrFavorite Scenes in Obsession FallsPicnicEvery scene of Max, the derpy dogEvery time the Tilikum squirrels are behaving the way they always have "The squirrels around here thought they owned the place." - Josiah HavenMy Book Rating4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 🌶🌶I enjoyed this book, and the only reason I'm not giving it a perfect 5 is that I could guess who the stalker was early on, and I love a suspense thriller that keeps me guessing until the end. That's just me, though. I see reviews saying they didn't see it coming. I guess I've been reading more detective series than I realize.I also expected the spice level to be the same as the previous series (they were really spicy), but that doesn't mean this book is missing the heat. Sparks are still flying. You will still swoon. You can say it's a personal preference, but it doesn't reflect how Claire Kingsley writes. She's still one of my favorite auto-buy authors, and I'll continue to devour all her books in the future.PinterestQuotes from the Book "Nice girls didn't belong with a$$holes like me. She was blue sky and sunshine, plucky optimism, and happiness. I was a stoic cloud of optimism and surliness. It would never work.""I liked him because he was gruff and stoic and sexy and surprisingly sweet under that surly lumberjack exterior.""I'm not leaving you unless you make me."Read Obsession FallsWhat are you reading this season? Books Beautiful Exile by Catherine Cowles Book Review 9:44 AM Beautiful Exile by Catherine Cowles Book Review I'm excited to share my Beautiful Exile book review. I ordered one romantic suspense, but Catherine Cowles delivered a full buffet of emotions in Beautiful Exile. This fourth book in the Sparrow Falls series brought me on a roller coaster ride of all the feels. I laughed, and it brought me to tears. But it was a healing, beautiful cry because that's what Catherine does. She doesn't shy away from the hard truths of life: trauma, heartache, life scars, and then she brings you to healing, to the light, and she holds your hands as you navigate that journey.Beautiful Exile SummaryArden should've known Lincoln Pierce was trouble the moment she held a knife to his throat. She's been hiding her true identity in a small town until her brother's best friend moves in next door. When her carefully constructed lies start to unravel, Linc steps in to protect her, especially when the person hunting her resurfaces. Their connection deepens as Linc reveals he's more than a ruthless billionaire; he becomes the man who shows her how to truly live. But both have secrets and as their pasts collide, they face a threat that could destroy the life they've begun to build together. TropesRomantic suspenseHeroine in hidingProtective heroBlack cat energy (or should I say panther? Because this girl is fierce. Thus, Linc calls her Vicious)Found familyBillionaire x Reclusive ArtistBrother's best friendSmall townBook CharactersArden ColsonI sometimes felt like I didn't fit. I was just a little too odd. Not especially good with people. I was better with my paints, metals, animals, and sparring – all the things that didn't need words.Lincoln PierceI might not have met Lincoln Pierce, but I heard plenty. Merciless when it came to protecting various holdings. Innovative when it came to his approach to business. And if what I'd been told was right, a bit paranoid about giving his trust.Beautiful Exile by Catherine Cowles Book ReviewBook Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 I enjoyed every page, every plot, every banter, and every hot smoking scene in Beautiful Exile. The heartwarming scenes between Arden and her family. The swoony moments between her and Lincoln. Even the mystery unraveling is a roller coaster ride, I tell you. What I like:ArdenWhat a strong, amazing woman. I love how she's flawed, vulnerable, and scared—but not weak or timid. She embodies the phrase "do it afraid." I love how hard she fought for her freedom from the shackles of her past through her art and the love of people around her. I love her quick wit and jiu-jitsu skills.Lincoln PierceLincoln is just as wonderful, lending Arden his strength and protection (despite her resistance) while battling his own darkness. The ColsonsAs always, the Colson siblings' chat group is hilarious. And Lolli! This super grandma is the kind of force and fun we need. Nora, of course. That quiet strength behind every Colson kid. The wind beneath everyone's wings. The mother we all want to have. That scene between her and Arden opened up the waterworks, man. I love that moment. And Brutus, the ever-loyal service and protection dog. Gripping SuspenseI'm proud to say I have a hunch about who it was, but I can't quite figure out how it will all come together. Of course, Catherine effortlessly incorporated that. PacingThe narrative flows seamlessly, keeping you hooked without overwhelming.Healing LoveTheir relationship is what healing looks like—two broken people coming together not to shatter each other further but to heal together, accepting each other exactly as they are. Linc and Arden's journey is a testament to the power of love and understanding in overcoming past traumas. Read Beautiful ExileBeautiful Exile is now available on Kindle (Free with Kindle Unlimited), audiobook, and paperback.
