Pay Tribute And Memorialize Our Best Friends

Pay Tribute and Memorialize Our Best Friends

Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.
-Agnes Sligh Turnbull

I grew up with dogs. Needless to say, I know exactly how it feels to lose a furry best friend. Just recently one of our senior dogs Beshing crossed over the rainbow bridge. For some people, “It’s just a dog.” For a pet owner, it is similar to losing a family member. You grieve; you try to get on with your life without that familiar smiling face that greets you first thing in the morning, and the excited wagging tail that welcomes you home. If only our pets could live longer. At least now, there are materials online that can help us in our bereavement, allowing us to pay tribute and memorialize our best friends with pet memorials the way they deserve.

Do dogs go to heaven?

If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went. - Will Rogers

Are there animals in heaven? Will you see your pets that passed away in the afterlife (if you even believe in it)?

Personally, I believe “Heaven's the place where all the dogs you've ever loved come to greet you.”

If you ask me what I think heaven will be like, I’d say it’s a beautiful beach with dogs running around and where two-way communication with them is possible. And there is no need to pick up after them.

So do dogs go to heaven? That’s still an argument.

But for the believer, here’s a verse from Psalm 36:6 that can answer that question:

Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

Even in the movie/book Heaven is for Real, Colton, the boy who went to heaven said there are animals in heaven.

In my heart as a pet owner, I believe that one day when the time comes, I’ll be reunited with all the pets I’ve lost.

Searching for comfort, I’ve found this treasure entitled Poem from My Pet in Heaven that is both comforting and tearing at one’s heartstrings. Here’s an excerpt:

Today I played with my favorite toy, the one I left behind
All I did was think of it and there it was for me to find.
And guess what else I found in Heaven? Guess who I play with all the time
Yes, you are here in Heaven with me. You helped me write this rhyme.

It was a sobfest reading that poem but at the same time it is calming for the bereaved heart.

Barry Barnes, the author of this beautiful poem and owner of Heavenly Images (Pet Portraits and Memorials for Pets) wrote the book My Pet Letter from Heaven (available on Amazon). He also has Only with Love CD recorded back in 2007 (also on Amazon).

Life with pets

Having a dog will bless you with the happiest days of your life and one of the worst days.

No matter how bad your day went, it is so good to be coming home to someone who does not care how much you earn or judges you according to the word’s standard.

For a pet, as long as you come home safe, give them belly rubs, and feed them, you’re the best person in the world. You are a hero.

They can keep you grounded and they are great reminders of what is essential in life.

Losing a pet

That must be why losing a dog or a pet can be devastating. There is no one there anymore to lick your sadness away. There is no one there patiently waiting for you the whole day, who will offer you nothing but pure unadulterated love and lasting loyalty.

That is why losing a pet has big impact in our lives.

It is a sad reality.

We can’t tell how many days we have left to spend with our pets. All we can do is spend as much time with them while they’re around.

Give them unconditional love.
Play with them.
Care for them when they’re sick or scared.
Bring them along to enjoy the outdoors if doable.
Talk to them.

Oh, yes. I’m one of those ‘weirdos’ who talk to dogs and animals like they understand me. Sometimes I think they do.

As for our dogs, I don’t have to tell them if I’m not okay. They just automatically show me more affection and love than usual.

When I’m sick, they’re there watching me and checking on me.

What did we do to deserve the love and loyalty of dogs?

Why can’t we human learn humanity from them? The world sometimes boggles me.

We may never be prepared for the day we bid our pets farewell. I know I will never be despite losing a lot since time immemorial.

Whether we lose them from an illness or from old age, it is always painful.

I think the pain does not go away. We just learn to live with it.

The void of their absence will never be filled by another pet. That place will also belong to them (so much like their favourite spot in our house). They have marked their territories in our hearts, leaving paw prints that no amount of tears will ever wash away.

We just learn to love again and open our hearts to another pet that needs a home. Because that’s what they taught us: to love unconditionally and untiringly. That is the legacy they left which we need to honor in their memory.

They really are the heroes of our lives. And it is just right to preserve their memories because they deserve to be remembered. They are heavenly images no less.
