Reflection: What Are You Waiting For?

8:00 AM

What Are You Waiting For?
If we wait until we're ready,
we'll be waiting for the rest of our lives.
Lemony Snicket

What Are You Waiting For?

I don't know about you, but I hate to wait around. Waiting for people to turn up during a meeting. Waiting in line especially when I see the person at the counter dilly dallying. Waiting for people to move when I'm all up and ready to go. Makes me want to ask, "What are you waiting for?!"

I've realized the reason why I hate waiting is because I've also procrastinated in my life when I was younger that now I'm running out of time. And I want to make the most of every second. I want every moment to count. Even on weekends, I need to be doing something productive. And if I need to relax, I need to be spending quality time with the people who matter to me.

I would detest myself for wasting an hour on Facebook or other socials. So I'm conscious not to browse too much.

I know the fruits of waiting is sweet because I've always been waiting for God's will to unfold in my life. That's a different story altogether. There are things you can't rush.

There is a time for everythingand a season
for every activity under the heavens.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

But you can't make me watch crappy movies or read lame books anymore. That will be wasting precious time.

I can't be friends with those who seem to let life's negativity dictate their future. Or those too toxic to be around.

I don't wait around for people to apologize before I move on. That will be waiting for hell to freeze over.

I won't wait for the world to come to peace. I'm searching for peace within myself every day as difficult as that may be.

I don't wait around for Prince Charming to arrive. I decided to build my own kingdom. If he cares to join me and I see he's worth sharing my colorful though sometimes boring introvert life with, I might open the gates to the castle and let him in. And we may not live happily all the days of our lives but at least we'll be backing up each other through the tough times, fighting trolls and evil witches together, winning battles or walking away from fights we don't want to bother joining together.

You get the picture.

Yeah, youth is wasted on the young. Now I know what George Bernard Shaw means. Gulp. I'm getting old.

Well, I'd rather be old and wise than young and careless. Growing old is inevitable so my goal is to age gracefully. I'd get there eventually so why not arrive in grace. Right?

What about you? Do you like to wait? What are you waiting for?

  1. Hi, Lux!

What a great post, dear friend! Young as you still are (compared to Shady) it is encouraging to know that you are already becoming aware of how valuable your time is and spending it more wisely than before. Imagine how stingy you will be with your time when you are in your mid 60s!

It is a useful exercise to make note of how much time is wasted tweeting and poking friends and strangers on social media and how often you go places and do things to please others when you'd rather be doing something that pleases you. Learning to set boundaries and "just say no" when people try to rope you into joining them in time sucking pursuits is a sign of maturity and organization, traits I admire. Instead of waiting for the love of your life to show up at your doorstep, use this time to prepare yourself to receive that love. Work on yourself to achieve peak mental and physical fitness. Broaden your horizons by continuing to educate yourself. Having done those things, when you ask for love, you will be asking "with integrity," because you have done all you can to make yourself worthy of receiving. You still have most of your life ahead of you, but you are very wise for making these adjustments at this early stage of the game.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend Lux!

  2. I too do not like waiting around for things to be done and waiting for people who are always late. Have a beautiful new week!

  3. I struggle with waiting too! I agree, it's important not to waste time while we're waiting, and not to wait for things to be ideal before we live. We need to make the most of every moment!

  4. I think your line about somethings are worth waiting for is so true. Knowing when to wait & when to act & which things to wait on and which not to definitely comes with age! :)

  5. I cannot stand waiting, even though I am a pretty patient person. I prefer to be doing things, and I am a punctual person, so if someone is very late I consider it rude, inconsiderate and a waste of my time. I think that if someone is going to be late they should call and say it so that at least the other person knows. Wonderful post, dear Lux. Love and hugs to you, thank you so much for sharing.

  6. I'm almost 30 and I can relate to your sentiments. I know that it's never too late to make up for the mistakes of my youth - wrong choices, indecisions, wasted years. I'm terribly guilty that sometimes I always look back and cry over my regrets when I should be focusing on the present and preparing for the future.

  7. Great thoughts, Lux. I'm waiting for surgery and the long road ahead to get my life back. You helped me remember today that though everything is up in the air concerning my physical body, I must go on with life amidst the pain. Thank you.

  9. I always enjoy your thought-provoking posts! You make a great point about valuing our time more, but also that some things are worth waiting for - and are often out of our control. I've definitely be thinking more lately about how best to spend my time, which can only be a good thing! :)

  15. Right now I'm waiting for my baby. But I'm not waiting. I'm busy preparing and taking care of other kids and doing school and reading GOOD books. ;) I wish I could say I was waiting for something, truthfully, but there are seasons of life when we're so busy, we wake up running, eh? That's where I'm at.

Growing old is definitely one of those things you can't avoid. =)

  21. And sometimes, you just get the perfect message you need to hear at the perfect time. I needed to hear that I don't wait for people to apologise before moving on. I think that's something I need to do today.
